I took a little time……

I took a little hiatus from my blog. I took a little time for “me”. Every time I turned the computer on I would see that “you can’t pour from an empty cup” quote, and, as we all know, it’s true. The funny thing is that I spend so much time (mostly all of my time) doing things for my kids and family (cooking, cleaning, getting crafts set up, having activities and toys ready for when they woke up, came home from school etc.) that at the end of the day I was exhausted. When the kids did wake up, or came home from school, I was tired, sometimes grumpy and short with them. Doesn’t add up right? Pretty much the opposite of what I was going for.

I’ve been getting up earlier in the morning (who knew that actually GIVES you more energy………seriously, who’s been withholding this information?) It truly IS a game-changer. Having time in the morning to shower, get ready, drink a hot coffee, read a few pages of my book, play on my tablet, make lunches etc. Then when those wee-me’s wake up, I am READY for them. It sets the mood for the day.

I’ve also been eating A LOT healthier and exercising regularly. Spring gives you a boost. (what is it about Winter that makes you want to curl up on the couch and eat crap? damn you Winter) I have been following the 21 day fix program. Clean, healthy eating. Fresh fruit, veggies, whole grains, protein. No packaged crap, no junk. You know the deal, you get what you put in.

I have also been doing more of what I love to do. I have been gobbling up books. I think I have read more in the last 3 months then I did all last year. When the girls go down for their nap I tidy up, do what I need to accomplish and then spend the rest of nap enjoying a coffee and reading. Pure. Bliss. I have also been baking, sewing here and there and relaxing in our hammock (why do I feel like I am slacking when I do this, honestly, it’s better than a nap).

My kids (and husband) have all noticed the change. Not that I was an impatient grump before, but I am definitely far more patient and chill when I am getting what I need. At the end of the day I still have energy for an impromptu trip to the park or to spend those extra twenty minutes snuggling in bed, reading books and giggling with them.

Taking better care of myself makes me a better mother. Plain and simple. If you are NOT taking care of yourself………..do better. You deserve it.

Taking Stock :: June

Making: piles to donate (what else is new? I’ve given half our house away this winter and I STILL have more to give away)

Cooking: lots of bbq’ing around here lately (tenderloin and chicken mainly)

Drinking: Pink Grapefruit flavoured sparkling water (do yourself a favour, go buy some. President’s Choice Blue Menu)

Looking: for light fixtures (that are not ultra modern and not ugly…daunting task)

Playing: truly nothing these days……kids are outside most of the time and have an easy time occupying themselves in the backyard (swings, water table, sand table…..no “mom” required)

Wasting: time on the internet when I should be checking off the to-do list

Waiting: for school to be over, so many fun things to do with my C-man

Enjoying: my mother’s day bench, sitting and reading with my coffee outside in the morning

Wishing: for sunshine this weekend

Liking: the rain today (no guilt for not being outside)

Sewing: pillowcase dresses for the girls

Wondering: when my bathroom will be finished (cripes!)

Loving: being able to go out for a walk at 8:30-9pm after kiddies are in bed and chores and done (yay summer)

Hoping: our neighbours sell their house to a young family

Marveling: at how one child can so quickly pick up the habit of another…….

Needing: new sandals

Smelling: the “other” neighbours laundry detergent (yecck! they use some ridiculous tropical chemical crap storm detergent and it wafts into our yard ( a combo of hanging out in Bath & Body Works, and old lady in an antique shop kinda smell….)

Wearing: striped tunic and black crops

Following: Pinterest pins for summer ideas

Noticing: how tall C1 is

Knowing: summer will be gone before it even gets here!!

Thinking: about cottage week already

Feeling: accomplished (gutted ALL the closets in the house)

Bookmarking: BOOKS, so so many books I want to read. I have a line-up ready to go

Opening: package after package of blueberries, my kids are addicted

Giggling: at C2’s laugh. Full. Belly. Chuckle!

Thankful: for my hardworking husband

coconut + chocolate

I’ve been on a coconut kick as of late. With nothing sweet in the house I consulted Pinterest. Really….why do I do this???¬†

Taking Stock :: February

Making: car seat ponchos (likely for next year now….shesh)

Cooking: eggs, eggbakes, frittatas, quiche, egg cups, etc. with a never-ending supply of free range eggs from the gals (Chickaletta & Ruby) we are protein packin’

Drinking: pear lychee tea

Reading: The Last Testament by Sam Bourne

Wanting: a chocolate bar (lyndt sea salt dark chocolate)

Looking: for a square foldable card table for our new table tent (apparently not so popular any more)

Playing: board games! C1 is finally old enough to be interested and has the attention span

Wasting: my mornings (sleeping in, means no hot coffee & book quiet time for mama)

Waiting: for my mom to hurry up and get home already, she is missing out on fun with the kiddos (and yes mom, I know you are counting the days)

Enjoying: this “winter” we are having. Enough snow to play for a few days and then warm sunny spring like days for walks and vitamin d

Wishing: I had more time to spend with all my amazing friends whom I am missing

Liking: that I’ve been able to trade my unproductive internet time for reading and projects once again

I have a cold……

and not the cute, rosy-cheeked, sniffly, I need a tea cold. I have a red dry nose, baggy eye, dry flem, crabby cold. The ugly cold. All this after I spent my evening at my holistic health wellness class on seasonal eating and eating for health. Ironic no?

However, as every mom is full aware…mama bears don’t get to be sick (unless hospitalized ha!) So I will suck it up. Eat some of this stew http://www.udderlyfit.com/beef-and-butternut-squash-stew/ I made the other day, and use today as an opportunity to cuddle on the couch and watch Frozen for the 17th time. No guilt today……mom’s having a working sick day!!!!

The problem with a good book…..

I just finished reading “The Winter Folly” by Lulu Taylor. It was around 5oo pages and I swallowed it whole. It consumed our lives for two days (sneaking to the bathroom, putting on a Disney movie to keep the kids in one room, staying up to an ungodly hour).

It was a great book, but there’s a problem with a good book. It fills you with a such a high, a good page turner that you can’t put down, can’t stop thinking about. You can’t stop reading yet you want it to last. You read it, then it’s done. High then low. Then you want to pile yourself into another great book right away…..but it never seems as good at the time. ¬†Reader’s problems huh?

 

Read

Books make me happy. I am going to read more books. I have always been a reader but with three kiddos to look after I have not made it a priority in the past few months. I am apart of a friend’s book club, and while I find it a good way to read titles I wouldn’t normally choose myself, I do cheat and read my own picks on the side.

A co-worker and friend gave me a book for my birthday in 2003. It is a Reader’s Journal where you can log books read. I have diligently been logging the year, title and author along with where the book came from (library, borrowed, purchased) since 2003. It’s fun to look back on titles you have forgotten about, and to jog your memory.

READ

I’ve been pulling a “mom” so far in 2016 (my mom will lie in bed, sometimes until 2am reading a good book) and curling up with a book in bed, often losing track of time. I read “Inside The O’Brien’s” by Lisa Genova (previously read her “Still Alice” for book club) and it was fantastic. It was about a family enduring Huntington’s Disease. I am currently working on “The Winter Folly” by LuLu Taylor and I can’t seem to put it down.
